Overview

Valikunja Peak, also known as Ajjikunja, is one of the lesser-known trekking routes in the Kudremukh landscape. The trek starts near Kerekatte and enters dense shola forests filled with streams, native trees, and rich birdlife. After several kilometres of forest walking, the trail opens into rolling grasslands with continuous views of the surrounding hills.

The final section is the most demanding part of the trek. A steep climb of nearly 70 degrees leads to the summit, requiring careful footing, especially after rain. From the top, trekkers are rewarded with panoramic views of the Kudremukh ranges, valleys, and forests stretching toward the Udupi region. Local folklore also associates the summit with the footprint of the monkey king Vali, giving the peak its name.

The trek covers around 18 km and usually takes 7–8 hours to complete. Camping is not allowed inside the national park, and entry is regulated through the Karnataka Forest Department with limited daily permits.
