Overview

One of the most popular treks to lakes in Kashmir is the Tarsar Marsar Trek, which begins at Aru and moves through the mountainous scenery around Aru Valley and Pahalgam, passing the Lidder Valley en route to Lidderwat and Shekwas.

Once the route ascends in elevation, the scenery transforms into extensive pastures and mountain basins. The Tarsar Lake is renowned for its nut-shaped contours and deep-blue-green color. Depending on the specific route followed, the trek may proceed on to Sundarsar and the mysterious Marsar Lake, which is usually encircled by steep mountains. Some travel companies take the travelers through a mountain pass and bring them back around to Aru.

The trail also goes through the areas that serve as temporary settlements of the shepherding communities, thus giving this hike a cultural facet to the natural one. One of the most widely marketed seasons for trekking in this area is from July to September, but snow, rain and local policies can influence the trek.

Though known for its picturesque beauty, this is not an easy day hike, but a strenuous multi-day trek at high altitude.
