Overview

The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek starts from Shitkadi near Sonamarg and finishes at Naranag after crossing several high mountain passes. Over seven days, the trail winds through vast alpine meadows, shepherd settlements, ridgelines, and pristine lakes, each with its own character. Unlike many Himalayan treks where the summit is the main attraction, this trek offers memorable scenery every single day.

Trekkers usually camp beside lakes such as Vishansar, Krishansar, Gadsar, Satsar, Gangbal, and Nundkol. The route crosses Gadsar Pass, the highest point of the trek, where wide views of snow-covered peaks and valleys unfold. River crossings, boulder sections, and long walking days make the trek physically demanding despite the gradual gradients.

Weather changes quickly in the Kashmir Himalayas, and rain, cold winds, or even light snowfall are possible during the trekking season. Proper acclimatization, layered clothing, and good endurance are essential. For trekkers looking for a week-long Himalayan adventure with varied landscapes, this trek consistently delivers one of the most rewarding experiences in India.

Itinerary

  1. 1

    Srinagar to Shitkadi Campsite

Drive from Srinagar to Shitkadi near Sonamarg. Meet your trek leader, complete registrations, check your equipment, and rest at the campsite. The evening is reserved for a briefing and preparation before the trek begins the following morning.

  2. 2

    Shitkadi to Nichnai

Start the trek through pine forests and open meadows before climbing towards Nichnai Pass. Cross beautiful grazing fields and mountain streams before descending to the Nichnai campsite. The gradual ascent also helps with acclimatization.

  3. 3

Nichnai to Vishansar Lake via Nichnai Pass

Cross Nichnai Pass and descend into wide alpine valleys. Continue through rocky sections before reaching the turquoise waters of Vishansar Lake. Camp beside the lake while enjoying views of the surrounding snow-covered peaks.

  4. 4

Vishansar to Gadsar via Krishansar Lake

Pass the twin lakes of Vishansar and Krishansar before climbing steadily to Gadsar Pass, the highest point of the trek. Descend through colorful alpine valleys to the Gadsar campsite near another pristine mountain lake.

  5. 5

    Gadsar to Satsar

Walk through flower-filled meadows, boulder fields, and small stream crossings before reaching the cluster of alpine lakes known as Satsar. This relatively shorter day allows time to recover before the final mountain crossings.

  6. 6

    Satsar to Gangbal and Nundkol

Cross the scenic Zaj Pass before descending into one of the trek's most beautiful valleys. Reach Gangbal and Nundkol Lakes, located beneath Mount Harmukh, and camp beside the water surrounded by open meadows.

  7. 7

Gangbal to Naranag and Drive to Srinagar

Descend through forests and traditional Kashmiri villages to Naranag. After completing the trek, drive back to Srinagar. The descent is long but straightforward and marks the end of one of the Himalayas' most scenic multi-day treks.
