Overview
The Goechala Trek begins in Yuksom, the historic first capital of Sikkim, and enters the protected landscapes of Kanchenjunga National Park. The route gradually climbs through dense forests of oak, magnolia, and rhododendron before reaching alpine campsites such as Tshoka, Dzongri, Thansing, and Lamuney. Every day offers a noticeable change in terrain, making the journey as rewarding as the destination.
One of the highlights is the climb to Dzongri Top, where trekkers get their first panoramic view of Kanchenjunga, Pandim, Kabru, Rathong, and other Himalayan peaks. The final summit push begins well before dawn, leading to Goechala View Point 1. As the first rays of sunlight strike the east face of Kanchenjunga, the entire mountain range glows in shades of orange and gold.
The trek demands good endurance because of its long walking days, repeated altitude gains, and high elevation. Proper acclimatization is essential, and the weather can change rapidly with freezing temperatures even during the trekking season. For experienced trekkers, Goechala remains one of the finest mountain-view treks in the Indian Himalayas.
