Overview

The Goechala Trek begins in Yuksom, the historic first capital of Sikkim, and enters the protected landscapes of Kanchenjunga National Park. The route gradually climbs through dense forests of oak, magnolia, and rhododendron before reaching alpine campsites such as Tshoka, Dzongri, Thansing, and Lamuney. Every day offers a noticeable change in terrain, making the journey as rewarding as the destination.

One of the highlights is the climb to Dzongri Top, where trekkers get their first panoramic view of Kanchenjunga, Pandim, Kabru, Rathong, and other Himalayan peaks. The final summit push begins well before dawn, leading to Goechala View Point 1. As the first rays of sunlight strike the east face of Kanchenjunga, the entire mountain range glows in shades of orange and gold.

The trek demands good endurance because of its long walking days, repeated altitude gains, and high elevation. Proper acclimatization is essential, and the weather can change rapidly with freezing temperatures even during the trekking season. For experienced trekkers, Goechala remains one of the finest mountain-view treks in the Indian Himalayas.

Itinerary

  1. 1

    Drive from NJP/Bagdogra to Yuksom

Arrive at New Jalpaiguri or Bagdogra and drive to Yuksom. Meet your trek leader, complete permit formalities, check your equipment, and rest for the night before beginning the trek.

  2. 2

    Yuksom to Sachen

Start the trek through dense forests and cross several suspension bridges over mountain streams. The gradual climb to Sachen helps begin the acclimatization process while introducing the lush landscapes of Kanchenjunga National Park.

  3. 3

    Sachen to Tshoka

Continue climbing through forests filled with rhododendrons, oak, and magnolia before reaching the small settlement of Tshoka. The campsite offers the first clear views of snow-covered Himalayan peaks.

  4. 4

    Tshoka to Dzongri

Climb steadily through alpine forests before reaching Dzongri. After lunch, hike to Dzongri Top for one of the finest panoramic viewpoints in Sikkim, overlooking Kanchenjunga and the surrounding mountain ranges.

  5. 5

    Dzongri to Thansing

Descend slightly before crossing wide alpine meadows and glacial streams. Walk beneath Mount Pandim and reach the scenic campsite at Thansing, surrounded by open valleys and towering peaks.

  6. 6

    Thansing to Lamuney

A relatively short trekking day allows for better acclimatization. Walk across open meadows to Lamuney while enjoying uninterrupted views of Kanchenjunga and nearby Himalayan summits. Rest early for the pre-dawn summit attempt.

  7. 7

Goechala View Point 1 and Return to Thansing

Begin before dawn and climb steadily to Goechala View Point 1. Watch sunrise illuminate Kanchenjunga before retracing your steps to Lamuney and continuing down to Thansing for the night. This is the longest and most demanding day of the trek.

  8. 8

    Thansing to Tshoka

Descend through alpine meadows and forests while revisiting familiar sections of the trail. The downhill walk is long but easier than the ascent and offers a final opportunity to enjoy the changing Himalayan scenery.

  9. 9

    Tshoka to Yuksom

Complete the final descent through forests, suspension bridges, and river crossings before reaching Yuksom. Celebrate the successful completion of the trek and spend the night in the village.
