Overview

Beas Kund is a short Himalayan trek that packs a surprising amount of variety into four days. Starting from Dhundi, the trail follows the Beas River through open valleys, grazing meadows, and glacial terrain. Unlike many forest-heavy Himalayan treks, this route remains open for most of the journey, giving you continuous mountain views from the very first day.

The biggest attraction is Beas Kund, a glacial lake believed to be the source of the Beas River and associated with Sage Vyas. Along the way, you'll camp at scenic locations like Palchani Thach and Lohali, surrounded by some of the highest peaks near Manali. Friendship Peak, Hanuman Tibba, Shitidhar, and Ladakhi Peak dominate the skyline throughout the trek.

Although Beas Kund is considered suitable for fit beginners, the summit day involves a steep climb over boulders and moraine. Good fitness makes the experience far more enjoyable. This trek is ideal for anyone preparing for longer Himalayan expeditions while still wanting rewarding mountain scenery. The 4-day itinerary is the one followed by most major trekking operators.

Itinerary

  1. 1

Manali – Dhundi – Palchani Thach

Drive from Manali to Dhundi before starting the trek. Follow the Beas River through open meadows and gradually climb to Palchani Thach. The short trekking distance helps with acclimatization while offering uninterrupted views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.

  2. 2

    Palchani Thach to Lohali

Continue trekking through alpine meadows, stream crossings, and rocky sections before reaching Lohali campsite. The gradual climb provides excellent views of Friendship Peak and Hanuman Tibba while preparing your body for the higher altitude of the following day.

  3. 3

Lohali – Beas Kund – Lady Leg – Lohali

Begin early for the steepest day of the trek. Climb over moraine and boulder sections to reach Beas Kund, then continue towards Lady Leg for wider mountain views if conditions permit. Return to Lohali after spending time at the lake. This is the longest and most physically demanding day.

  4. 4

    Lohali – Dhundi – Manali

Retrace the trail through meadows and valleys back to Dhundi. Drive to Manali after completing the trek. The mostly downhill walk offers a relaxed finish while giving you one last chance to enjoy the upper Beas Valley.
