Overview

Friendship Peak rises above Solang Valley in the Pir Panjal Range and is one of the most popular introductory expedition peaks in India. The journey begins with gradual trekking through forests and alpine meadows before reaching high camps near Lady Leg and Bakarthach. As the altitude increases, the terrain changes to moraine, glacier, and snow-covered slopes.

The summit climb starts well before dawn. Trekkers move across glaciers and steep snowfields using equipment such as crampons, ice axes, helmets, and ropes whenever conditions require. Although the route is considered non-technical under normal weather, it demands prior high-altitude trekking experience, strong fitness, and the ability to spend long hours above 15,000 feet.

From the summit at 17,352 feet, climbers are rewarded with sweeping views of Hanuman Tibba, Shitidhar, Deo Tibba, Indrasan, and the surrounding Pir Panjal peaks. Friendship Peak is often chosen as the next step after completing difficult Himalayan treks and before attempting more technical mountaineering expeditions.

Itinerary

  1. 1

Manali to Solang Valley and Trek to Bakarthach

Drive to Solang Valley before beginning the trek through forests and alpine meadows. The gradual ascent provides excellent views of surrounding peaks. Reach Bakarthach campsite and spend the evening acclimatizing for the higher camps ahead.

  2. 2

    Bakarthach to Lady Leg Camp

Climb through rocky terrain and moraine while gaining altitude steadily. Vegetation becomes sparse as glaciers and snowfields begin appearing. Reach Lady Leg Camp, where the expedition team prepares climbing equipment for the summit attempt.

  3. 3

    Acclimatization and Technical Training

Spend the day acclimatizing while practicing the use of crampons, ice axes, ropes, and glacier movement techniques. This session improves safety and prepares climbers for the summit day. Rest early for the overnight summit push.

  4. 4

Summit Friendship Peak and Return to Lady Leg

Begin well before midnight for the summit climb. Cross glaciers and snow slopes before reaching Friendship Peak at sunrise. After spending time on the summit, descend carefully to Lady Leg Camp. This is the longest and most physically demanding day of the expedition.

  5. 5

    Lady Leg to Solang Valley

Descend through moraine, meadows, and forest sections back to Solang Valley. The lower altitude provides welcome relief after the summit climb. Celebrate the successful expedition with the team before returning to Manali.

  6. 6

    Departure from Manali

Reserve this day for departure or as a weather buffer if summit conditions require schedule adjustments. Expedition itineraries commonly include an extra day to accommodate changing mountain weather.
