Overview

Pin Bhaba Pass is known as the "Great Himalayan Crossover" because it links two completely different mountain worlds. The trek begins in Kafnu, where dense forests, waterfalls, rivers, and green valleys dominate the landscape. As you gain altitude, the forests give way to alpine meadows, moraine fields, and glacier-fed streams before reaching Pin Bhaba Pass at 16,105 feet.

The pass day is the defining challenge of the trek. A long climb over loose rocks and occasional snow patches is followed by a steep descent into the barren mountains of Pin Valley. The contrast is immediate—green slopes disappear, replaced by colourful rocky mountains and wide open valleys typical of Spiti.

Most established trekking companies operate this as a 7-day trek from Kafnu to Mudh Village, while some include travel days from Shimla and Kaza, making it a 9-day itinerary. Because of the altitude, long trekking days, and demanding pass crossing, this trek is recommended for experienced trekkers with good endurance and prior high-altitude experience.

Itinerary

  1. 1

    Shimla to Kafnu

Drive from Shimla to Kafnu through the Sutlej Valley. Meet the trek leader, complete registrations, check your equipment, and stay overnight at the base camp. This is the last major settlement before entering the Bhaba Valley.

  2. 2

    Kafnu to Mulling

Begin trekking through dense pine forests alongside the Bhaba River. Cross wooden bridges and gradual ascents before reaching Mulling campsite. The trail introduces the lush scenery that defines the Kinnaur side of the trek.

  3. 3

    Mulling to Kara

Continue through alpine meadows and river crossings as the valley begins to widen. The climb is steady with several scenic viewpoints before reaching Kara campsite. Snow-covered peaks become more prominent as you gain altitude.

  4. 4

    Kara to Phutsirang

A shorter trekking day helps with acclimatization. The trail climbs above the tree line into alpine terrain with moraine sections and expansive mountain views before reaching Phutsirang campsite beneath the pass.

  5. 5

Phutsirang – Pin Bhaba Pass – Mangrungse

Start well before sunrise for the toughest day of the trek. Climb steadily over scree, snow patches, and moraine to reach Pin Bhaba Pass. From the top, witness the dramatic transition from the green Bhaba Valley to the barren Spiti landscape before descending to Mangrungse campsite.

  6. 6

    Mangrungse to Mudh Village

Descend gradually through the colourful landscapes of Pin Valley. Follow the Pin River to Mudh Village, the first permanent settlement after crossing the pass. Celebrate the successful completion of the trek and spend the night in a local homestay or camp.

  7. 7

    Mudh to Kaza

Drive from Mudh to Kaza through the spectacular Pin Valley. This marks the end of the trekking expedition, with onward travel usually arranged towards Manali or Shimla.
