Overview
Pin Parvati Pass is a true Himalayan expedition that begins in Barshaini and gradually follows the Parvati River through forests, alpine meadows, and high-altitude camps. Early sections pass familiar destinations such as Kheerganga and Tunda Bhuj before entering increasingly isolated terrain around Odi Thach, Mantalai Lake, and the upper glacier basin.
The approach to the pass involves glacier travel, moraine, snowfields, and multiple river crossings. Weather conditions can change rapidly, and camps are often established far from roads or permanent settlements. Crossing Pin Parvati Pass at over 17,400 feet requires excellent endurance, acclimatization, and previous experience on difficult Himalayan treks.
After the pass, the landscape changes dramatically as the trail descends into the cold desert of Pin Valley. Green forests disappear, replaced by barren mountains, wide valleys, and remote villages before the trek concludes at Mudh in Spiti. Few Himalayan treks offer such a dramatic transition between two completely different mountain environments.
