Overview

Hampta Pass begins from Jobra, a short drive from Manali. The initial trail winds through pine forests, waterfalls, and flower-filled meadows before reaching camps at Chika and Balu Ka Ghera. The gradual ascent makes acclimatization comfortable while offering constant views of the surrounding mountains.

The pass crossing is the highlight of the trek. After climbing snow slopes and rocky terrain, the trail reaches Hampta Pass at over 14,000 feet. From the top, the contrast between the lush Kullu Valley and the barren mountains of Lahaul becomes immediately visible. The descent is steeper, passing glaciers, streams, and loose rock before reaching Shea Goru.

Many itineraries include a drive to Chandratal Lake after completing the trek, depending on road conditions. Hampta Pass is ideal for trekkers who want to experience varied Himalayan terrain in a relatively short duration. It demands good fitness but remains achievable for first-time high-altitude trekkers with adequate preparation.

Itinerary

  1. 1

Manali to Jobra and Trek to Chika

Drive from Manali to Jobra before beginning the trek through pine forests and alongside the Rani Nallah stream. The trail is gradual and passes several waterfalls before reaching Chika campsite, located in an open meadow surrounded by towering mountains.

  2. 2

    Chika to Balu Ka Ghera

Follow the valley through alpine meadows, boulder sections, and river crossings. The terrain becomes increasingly rugged as you approach Balu Ka Ghera, a broad campsite surrounded by snow-covered peaks. Spend the evening preparing for the pass crossing.

  3. 3

Cross Hampta Pass and Trek to Shea Goru

Begin early for the climb to Hampta Pass. The ascent includes snow slopes, rocky sections, and glacier crossings depending on the season. After enjoying views from the pass, descend carefully into the barren Lahaul Valley and camp at Shea Goru beside a glacial stream.

  4. 4

Shea Goru to Chatru and Drive to Manali

Continue descending through rocky terrain to Chatru, where the trek concludes. If road conditions permit, visit Chandratal Lake before driving back to Manali via the Atal Tunnel. The return journey offers dramatic views of the Spiti and Lahaul landscapes.
