Overview

Shrikhand Mahadev is often compared with the toughest Himalayan pilgrimages because of its relentless ascent and extreme altitude. Starting from Jaon Village in Kullu district, the trail passes through Singhad, Thachru, Kali Ghati, Bheem Dwari, Parvati Bagh, and Nain Sarovar before reaching the sacred Shrikhand Mahadev peak.

Unlike many Himalayan treks that gradually gain altitude, Shrikhand involves continuous steep climbs, particularly between Singhad and Thachru. The route combines dense forests, meadows, rocky ridges, glacier patches, and exposed mountain terrain. Above Kali Ghati, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged, and weather conditions can change within minutes.

The highlight is the giant natural Shivling located at 5,227 meters. During the annual yatra, thousands of devotees attempt the trek, but only those with strong fitness and mental endurance complete it comfortably. Most established itineraries take around 7–8 days including travel and acclimatization. Due to altitude, steep gradients, and long trekking days, this trek is recommended only for experienced trekkers or very fit pilgrims.

Itinerary

  1. 1

    Shimla to Jaon Village

  2. 2

    Jaon to Thachru

Trek through Singhad and begin the steep climb towards Thachru. This section is considered one of the toughest stretches due to its continuous ascent through forests and mountain slopes. Camp overnight at Thachru.

  3. 3

    Thachru to Bheem Dwari

Continue climbing through Kali Ghati and high-altitude meadows. The trail becomes steeper and more exposed as you gain altitude. Reach Bheem Dwari, one of the main camping locations before the summit push.

  4. 4

    Bheem Dwari to Parvati Bagh

Trek through rocky terrain and alpine landscapes to reach Parvati Bagh. The campsite offers spectacular views of surrounding peaks and provides valuable acclimatization before the summit attempt.

  5. 5

Parvati Bagh to Nain Sarovar and Acclimatization

Visit Nain Sarovar, a sacred high-altitude lake associated with local mythology. Return to camp for acclimatization and rest before the summit day. This helps reduce the risk of altitude-related issues.

  6. 6

arvati Bagh – Shrikhand Mahadev Summit – Bheem Dwari

Begin before dawn and climb through glacier patches, boulder fields, and steep rocky sections to reach the Shrikhand Mahadev Shivling. After spending time at the summit, descend carefully back to Bheem Dwari. This is the longest and toughest day of the trek.

  7. 7

    Bheem Dwari to Jaon

Descend through Kali Ghati, Thachru, and Singhad before reaching Jaon Village. Although downhill, the long distance and steep sections require careful footing and endurance.
