Overview
Rajgad Fort, originally known as Murumbdev, served as the capital of the Maratha Empire for nearly 26 years before the capital shifted to Raigad. The fort is spread across three major fortified spurs—Padmavati Machi, Suvela Machi, and Sanjivani Machi—making it one of the largest and most architecturally impressive forts in Maharashtra.
The most common trekking route starts from Gunjavane Village and climbs steadily through forests, rocky sections, and stone steps before reaching Padmavati Machi. From there, trekkers can explore the fort's temples, water cisterns, ancient gateways, and the Balekilla, the highest point of the fort. The ridge walks between the machis offer spectacular views and are among the trek's biggest highlights.
From the summit, you can see Torna Fort, Sinhagad, Lingana, Raigad, and several other Sahyadri peaks on clear days. The trek is physically demanding because of its distance and elevation gain, making it better suited for trekkers with good fitness. Many visitors also choose to camp overnight to experience sunrise from the fort.
