Overview
Kalavantin Durg stands beside Prabalgad and is one of the most recognizable trekking destinations near Mumbai and Pune. The trek begins from Thakurwadi village and follows a gradual trail to Prabalmachi, a small settlement where most trekkers take a short break before the steeper climb begins.
The highlight of the trek is the final stretch of ancient rock-cut steps carved directly into the mountain. These exposed stairs have no protective railings in many sections, making the climb exciting but demanding. During weekends, local guides often assist trekkers on the last rocky patch leading to the summit.
From the top, you'll get clear views of Prabalgad, Matheran, Karnala Fort, the surrounding Sahyadri ranges, and the valleys below. Although the trek is relatively short, it requires caution, especially during the monsoon when the rock becomes slippery. Starting early in the morning is the safest and most comfortable option.
