Overview
Lohagad, which means "Iron Fort," has stood for centuries overlooking the Pavana region near Lonavala. The fort changed hands between several dynasties, including the Satavahanas, Chalukyas, Mughals, and Marathas. It later became an important stronghold of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who used it to store treasure captured during the Surat campaign.
The trek begins from Lohagadwadi and follows a broad stone pathway through four impressive gateways—Ganesh Darwaza, Narayan Darwaza, Hanuman Darwaza, and Maha Darwaza. The climb is gradual, making it one of the best introductory treks in Maharashtra. During the monsoon, the trail is lined with waterfalls, moss-covered walls, and green hills, while winter offers pleasant weather and clear mountain views.
The highlight of the fort is Vinchu Kata, a long fortified ridge that resembles a scorpion's tail. From here, trekkers enjoy panoramic views of Visapur Fort, Pawna Lake, Tung Fort, Tikona Fort, and the surrounding Sahyadri ranges. The trek usually takes 3–4 hours to complete and is suitable for almost all age groups with basic fitness.
