Overview
Madhugiri Fort was built during the Vijayanagara period and later strengthened by Hyder Ali. Today, the trek combines history with adventure, making it one of Karnataka's most popular fort treks. The route starts at the base of the hill and follows a series of gateways, stone staircases, and narrow rock-cut paths leading to the summit.
The first half of the trek is straightforward, but the upper section becomes much steeper. Granite slabs inclined at nearly 70–80 degrees, supported by iron railings in key sections, require careful footing. During or immediately after rainfall, these rocks become slippery, so proper trekking shoes are essential.
At the summit, you'll find the ruins of Madhugiri Fort, ancient gateways, water tanks, temples, and sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. The climb itself takes around 1.5–2 hours, making it an ideal sunrise trek or weekend escape from Bengaluru. Although suitable for beginners with good fitness, the exposed rock sections can feel intimidating for those uncomfortable with heights.
