Overview

Kareri Lake lies in the Dhauladhar Range near Dharamshala, in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district. The lake sits at approximately 2,941 metres (9,650 feet) and is known for its freshwater setting, mountain surroundings, and seasonal freezing. The route is commonly approached from Kareri Village or via Ghera.

The lower trail passes through pine and broadleaf forests, with sections of uneven ground, steps, and stream crossings. As the route gains elevation, the forest gradually opens into grassland and rocky terrain along the Nyund nallah, the stream associated with the lake. The upper section includes boulders and exposed stretches where footing and weather conditions deserve attention.

A small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Shakti stands on a hill near the lake. The area also has traditional Gaddi shepherd shelters, reflecting the pastoral use of the surrounding mountains.

Itinerary

  1. 1

    Dharamshala to Liyoti

Drive about 25–27 km (around 2 hours) from Dharamshala to Kareri Village, then start walking. The trail leaves the road near Nolli Bridge and climbs through pine and broadleaf forest, with a waterfall and a small shack as rest points. It then crosses the Nyund stream on a metal bridge and reaches the camp. Sources put the walk at roughly 6–8 km and 4–5 hours. The climb is from about 5,900 ft to about 8,000 ft.

  2. 2

Liyoti to Kareri Lake and back to Liyoti

Start early. The trail follows the Nyund stream over boulder-strewn grassland, with some paved and some unpaved stretches. It reaches the lake at about 9,650 ft after a final rocky climb, about 6–7 km each way, roughly 14 km round trip and 7–8 hours including time at the lake.

  3. 3

Liyoti to Kareri Village, drive to Dharamshala

Descend about 6 km in roughly 3–4 hours, then drive back (about 2 hours). Operators quote a late-afternoon arrival in Dharamshala, weather and road dependent. Do not book same-day onward travel tight to this timing.
