Overview

Agumbe sits on the crest of the Western Ghats and is often called the "Cherrapunji of South India" because of its exceptionally high annual rainfall. Rather than a single summit trail, Agumbe offers a network of rainforest treks leading to waterfalls, hidden streams, viewpoints, and evergreen forests.

Popular trekking routes explore locations such as Barkana Falls, Onake Abbi Falls, Jogigundi Falls, and sections of the Agumbe Reserve Forest. The trails pass through thick rainforest where trekkers may spot Malabar giant squirrels, hornbills, lion-tailed macaques, and, with exceptional luck, the famous king cobra for which Agumbe is well known.

The terrain is generally easy, but slippery rocks, leeches during the monsoon, and continuous humidity make proper footwear essential. Most treks range from 5 to 10 km and can be completed within a day. Combined with Agumbe Sunset Point and nearby waterfalls, the destination offers one of the richest rainforest experiences in Karnataka.
