Overview

The Valley of Flowers lies inside the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve and comes alive during the monsoon when snowmelt and seasonal rain transform the valley into a carpet of alpine flowers. The trek begins at Govindghat and follows the Lakshman Ganga River to Ghangaria, the only settlement on the route. From there, separate trails lead to the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib.

Unlike summit treks, this journey focuses on the landscape rather than reaching a peak. Wooden bridges, waterfalls, glacial streams, and wide meadows replace long ridge walks. Depending on the time of your visit, you'll see different flowering species, making every week of the season slightly different.

The optional climb to Hemkund Sahib is significantly steeper than the valley trail. At over 14,000 feet, it demands good fitness and careful pacing. Together, the valley and Hemkund offer a balanced trekking experience with moderate walking, rich biodiversity, and high Himalayan scenery without requiring technical skills.

Itinerary

  1. 1

    Rishikesh to Govindghat

Drive through Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, and Joshimath before reaching Govindghat. The journey takes around 10–11 hours and follows the Alaknanda River for most of the route. Check into your accommodation, prepare your backpack, and rest before the trek begins.

  2. 2

    Govindghat to Ghangaria

Cross the suspension bridge and begin the gradual climb along the Lakshman Ganga River. The well-paved trail passes waterfalls, tea stalls, and resting points before reaching Ghangaria. This small mountain village serves as the base for both the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib.

  3. 3

Explore Valley of Flowers and Return to Ghangaria

Enter the national park early to maximize your time inside the valley. Walk through alpine meadows filled with seasonal flowers, streams, and rocky sections while enjoying views of surrounding peaks. Spend several hours exploring before returning to Ghangaria along the same trail.

  4. 4

Hemkund Sahib Visit and Return to Ghangaria

Begin before sunrise for the steep climb to Hemkund Sahib. The stone-paved trail gains altitude quickly, making slow and steady progress important. Visit the sacred lake and gurudwara before descending carefully to Ghangaria. Trekkers who prefer a relaxed day can skip this climb.

  5. 5

Ghangaria to Govindghat and Drive Back

Retrace the trail back to Govindghat, enjoying the descent through forests and river crossings. Depending on your schedule, continue driving toward Joshimath, Pipalkoti, or Rishikesh. An additional overnight halt is recommended if returning to the plains on the same day.
