Overview

Brahmatal starts from Lohajung, a mountain village in Chamoli district. The trail climbs gradually through oak and rhododendron forests before reaching Bekaltal, a peaceful lake surrounded by dense woodland. As you gain altitude, the forest begins to thin, revealing wide ridgelines that remain one of the biggest highlights of the trek.

Unlike many beginner treks, Brahmatal offers long stretches above the tree line. From these ridges, peaks like Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Chaukhamba, Neelkanth, and Hathi-Ghoda become constant companions. During winter, fresh snow transforms the forests, frozen lakes, and campsites into a completely different landscape.

The summit day is moderate rather than technical. The final climb to Brahmatal Top rewards trekkers with one of the broadest mountain panoramas available on a beginner-friendly trek. Daily distances remain manageable, making it suitable for first-time Himalayan trekkers who have prepared with regular walking, stair climbing, or cardio training.

Itinerary

  1. 1

    Rishikesh/Dehradun to Lohajung

Drive through Devprayag, Karnaprayag, and Gwaldam before reaching Lohajung. The journey takes around 10–11 hours and steadily climbs into the Garhwal Himalayas. After checking into the guesthouse, complete registration, meet the trek leader, inspect your gear, and prepare for the trek.

  2. 2

    Lohajung to Bekaltal

The trail begins with a gradual climb through oak and rhododendron forests. Several clearings provide the first mountain views before reaching Bekaltal, a quiet alpine lake surrounded by trees. In winter, the lake is often partially frozen. Camp nearby and spend the evening acclimatizing.

  3. 3

    Bekaltal to Brahmatal

Today's trail alternates between forest sections and open ridges. As altitude increases, panoramic views of Trishul and Nanda Ghunti become more prominent. Reach Brahmatal campsite by afternoon. Depending on the season, the nearby lake may be frozen. Rest well before the summit day.

  4. 4

Brahmatal Summit and Trek to Tilandi

Start before sunrise for the climb to Brahmatal Top. The ascent is steady with a few steeper snow-covered sections during winter. Spend time at the summit enjoying views of Trishul, Chaukhamba, Neelkanth, Kamet, and Nanda Ghunti before descending to Tilandi campsite through open ridges and forests.

  5. 5

Tilandi to Lohajung and Drive Back

Descend through mixed forests and traditional mountain villages before reaching Lohajung. After lunch, begin the drive toward Rishikesh or Dehradun. Most groups arrive late in the evening, so keeping an extra buffer night is recommended before onward travel
