Overview
Kedarkantha begins from Sankri, a small mountain village that serves as the gateway to several treks in the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary. The route starts inside dense pine and oak forests before opening into campsites like Juda Ka Talab and Kedarkantha Base Camp. During winter, these sections remain covered in snow, making every day's walk noticeably different.
The summit day starts well before sunrise. The climb is steeper than previous days, but the effort is short and steady. From the top, you can identify peaks such as Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Black Peak, and Ranglana on a clear morning. The descent follows the same valley, allowing trekkers to revisit familiar landscapes from a different perspective.
Daily trekking distances are comfortable, making Kedarkantha a practical choice for beginners who are physically active. While the altitude is moderate, cold temperatures and snow demand proper layering, waterproof footwear, and basic endurance. For many trekkers, it becomes their first experience of camping in snow and reaching a Himalayan summit.

- 1
Dehradun to Sankri
Drive around 190 km from Dehradun to Sankri through Mussoorie, Purola, Mori, and the Tons Valley. The journey takes 8–10 hours and gradually leaves the plains behind. Check into a guesthouse, meet the trek team, complete equipment checks, and prepare for the trek.
- 2
Sankri to Juda Ka Talab
The trek starts with a gradual climb through pine and oak forests. Depending on the season, snow begins appearing after a few kilometres. Reach Juda Ka Talab, a small high-altitude lake surrounded by trees. Camp beside the lake and spend the evening acclimatizing.
- 3
Juda Ka Talab to Kedarkantha Base Camp
Today's trail climbs above the tree line, offering longer views of surrounding valleys. The forest slowly gives way to open meadows and snowy slopes. Kedarkantha Base Camp sits below the summit ridge and provides clear views of tomorrow's route. Rest early for the summit attempt.

Summit Kedarkantha and Trek to Hargaon
Start before dawn for the summit climb. The final section is steeper but remains non-technical. Spend time at the summit before descending back to the ridge and continuing toward Hargaon. The campsite lies inside a forest, offering a quieter atmosphere than the base camp.
- 5
Hargaon to Sankri and Drive to Dehradun
Descend through forests back to Sankri, completing the trek. After lunch, begin the return drive to Dehradun. Most groups reach the city by late evening, so an overnight stay is recommended before booking onward travel.
