Overview

The trek through the Markha Valley starts in the fascinating terrain of Ladakh, which features high and rough mountains, arid slopes, as well as deep river valleys amidst green agricultural terraces and villages. Starting point of this trek depends on the chosen path and can vary between Chilling and Zingchen.

Among other things trekkers will be able to see local homes, Buddhist monasteries, green areas that people use for farming, and higher altitude grasslands that are being used for the pasture of livestock. The trek ends up near Nimaling, the high-altitude meadow with views of Kang Yatse.

Many trails run through Kongmaru La, which is a mountain pass that provides scenic views prior to going down through rugged terrain leading to Shang Sumdo, Martselang or Hemis. In some trails, there is an extra pass of Ganda La, coming from the other direction at Zingchen.

The trail combines the experience of culture with high altitude terrain. Acclimatisation, adequate supervision and up-to-date local information are essential as the trek includes altitudes beyond 5,000 metres.
