Overview
The Kanamo peak rises from the cold desert terrain of Spiti valley, which is located above the village of Kibber close to Kaza. This particular area does not have the lush Himalayan terrain that other parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh have; rather, this terrain features dry mountain sides, barren terrain, and clear views.
The common itinerary is that used by Kibber, which allows time in Kaza and the village for acclimatisation before moving on to the mountains. Itineraries that are published will often contain a high altitude base camp and summit attempt, before returning back to Kibber. The total number of days involved is usually between six and eight.
The Kanamo route is generally said to be non-technical, implying that there could be no need for technical systems used in the mountain climbing journey. However, this does not mean that it will be safe or easy for hikers who are inexperienced in hiking. Given that it is almost 6,000 meters high and there are issues like low levels of oxygen, wind, coldness and unpredictable weather, it might pose a danger to travelers.

Itinerary
- 1
Arrive in Kaza
Settle into the Spiti Valley gateway town, meet the local team and begin adjusting to the elevation. Keep the day flexible for travel and rest.
- 2
Kaza to Kibber
Travel to the village that serves as the usual trekking base. Allow time for acclimatisation, a health assessment and an equipment check.
- 3
Acclimatisation and preparation
Follow the expedition leader’s acclimatisation plan. The schedule should allow for rest and reassessment rather than rushing to higher elevations.
- 4
Move to the base-camp area
The group proceeds toward the designated camp on the mountain route, subject to weather, trail conditions and the leader’s assessment.
- 5
Rest and condition assessment
Keep time for acclimatisation, checking equipment and reviewing weather and health. The summit plan may be changed or cancelled if conditions are unsuitable.
- 6
Planned summit day or reserve day
This is the day commonly allocated for the summit attempt in some itineraries, or for a weather-related delay. A summit is never guaranteed, and the decision belongs with the qualified expedition team.
- 7
Return to Kibber and onward to Kaza
Return from the mountain area and reconnect with road transport. Some operators schedule an additional buffer day, making the expedition eight days or longer.
