Overview

The Buran Ghati trek starts from Janglik, an ancient village located in the valley of Pabbar and enters the Kinnaur district through Barua. This trek is full of diversity, including forests, streams, vast grasslands, and high altitudes in the Himalayan range.

The trek takes you up to Dayara, which is an open field surrounded by hills. From there, the trek goes on to Litham, a campsite located near the upper reaches of Pabbar valley and the Chandranahan waterfall. An excursion to the Chandranahan lakes is another important highlight of this trek.

Beyond Litham, the terrain is more rugged with an increasing approach towards the pass. Buran Ghati is the most prominent pass of the trek, and the state of snow can have a great influence on the trekking route. Further, after entering on to the Kinnaur side, the path goes downhill towards the village of Barua which is famous for its mountains and orchards.

This trek has been categorized as difficult because of its high altitude and remote location and mountain conditions. The access of the route needs to be locally ascertained.

Itinerary

  1. 1

    Shimla to Janglik

Drive: approx. 150–160 km · 7–10 hours · Overnight: Janglik (~2,800 m) Drive through Rohru and the Pabbar Valley to Janglik, the trek's starting village. Settle in, check your equipment and rest before beginning the hike.

  2. 2

    Janglik to Dayara Thach

Trek: approx. 6–8 km · 4–6 hours · Camp: ~3,350–3,400 m Climb through forests of oak and pine before emerging into the expansive Dayara meadows. The terrain opens up to beautiful views of surrounding mountain ridges.

  3. 3

    Dayara Thach to Litham

Trek: approx. 4–7 km · 3–5 hours · Camp: ~3,500–3,600 m Continue through meadows, streams and birch forests to Litham, a scenic campsite near the head of the valley. You may see waterfalls and the rugged terrain leading toward Buran Ghati.

  4. 4

    Chandranahan Lake excursion

Round trip: approx. 6–9 km · 5–7 hours · Return to Litham Take a guided excursion toward the Chandranahan glacial lakes, surrounded by rocky slopes and high mountain scenery. This is also an opportunity to assess how you are adjusting to altitude before moving higher.

  5. 5

    Litham to Dhunda

Trek: approx. 4–6 km · 4–5 hours · Camp: ~4,000–4,100 m Ascend beyond the meadows into rugged alpine terrain, with boulders and possible snow patches. Dhunda is the high camp before the pass, so the evening should be reserved for rest and preparation with your guide.

  6. 6

Dhunda to Buran Ghati Pass to River Camp

Trek: approx. 8–9 km · 8–11 hours · Pass: ~4,572 m This is the most demanding day. Ascend to Buran Ghati Pass and descend toward the River Camp on the Kinnaur side. Depending on snow and conditions, the pass may involve steep snow or ice, so crossing arrangements and any technical assistance must be managed by qualified mountain professionals. Do not attempt the crossing if the guide considers conditions unsafe.

  7. 7

    River Camp to Barua

Trek: approx. 5–7 km · 3–5 hours Descend through forest and mountain villages toward Barua, known for its traditional homes and orchards. The trek finishes here. Arrange onward transport in advance; the drive back to Shimla is long, so an overnight stop or an extra day may be more practical.
