Overview
Starting from the holy town of Gangotri, the Gaumukh Tapovan Trek follows the Bhagirathi River through Gangotri National Park. The initial trail passes dense pine and birch forests before opening into rocky glacial terrain leading to Bhojbasa and Gaumukh. The glacier marks the origin of the sacred Ganges, making it an important pilgrimage destination as well as a trekking route.
Beyond Gaumukh, the trail becomes significantly more demanding. Trekkers cross the Gangotri Glacier over loose moraine and boulders before making a steep climb to Tapovan. This high-altitude meadow sits beneath Shivling Peak and offers spectacular views of Bhagirathi I, II, III, Meru, Sudarshan, and other Himalayan giants. Tapovan is also known for its seasonal camps, grazing blue sheep, and sadhus who spend months in meditation.
Most reputed trekking companies follow an 8-day itinerary, allowing time for gradual ascent, acclimatization, and safe descent. The trek involves long walking days, glacier crossings, uneven terrain, and high altitude, making it suitable only for trekkers with good fitness and preferably prior Himalayan trekking experience.
