Overview
Whereas regular mountain trekking is about scaling up a mountain pass, the Chadar trekking is about traveling along a river valley. The Chadar trekking area is characterized by frozen river parts, rock walls, frozen ledges, and waterfalls. Some of the most famous spots of the Chadar trekking include Tibb Cave and Nerak.
Culturally, the Chadar trekking means a lot because before the advent of roads, the frozen river was used by the inhabitants of Zanskar to cross during the winter season.
It can happen very suddenly, and just because a river is frozen, there will still be places that aren’t safe to cross. Any new season should be evaluated by the proper authorities; past itineraries do not indicate whether the way is clear or not.
